Tennessee lawmakers face expulsion after gun control protest

Three Democratic Tennessee lawmakers are facing expulsion resolutions after Republicans said their gun control protest violated the chamber's rules of decorum -- an extraordinarily rare rebuke from state lawmakers following the Nashville school shooting. Tennessee's GOP Reps. Bud Hulsey, Gino Bulso and Andrew Farmer sponsored resolutions Monday in an effort to remove Democratic Reps. Gloria Johnson, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, arguing the lawmakers "did knowingly and intentionally bring disorder and dishonor to the House of Representatives through their individual and collective actions" by shouting and pounding at the podium as part of their protest against gun violence last Thursday. Legislators face a growing trend of censures and expulsions amid an intensifying culture war. Censures and expulsions in some state legislatures have become a growing consequence of the intensifying culture wars across the country. In Montana, Tennessee, and Oklahoma – states with Republican supermajorities in the House – conservative legislators have led the charge in disciplining lawmakers on the other side of the aisle. Democratic legislators have been expelled from their legislative seat, barred from the House floor, or removed from their committees for a variety of reasons, including allegedly violating parliamentary procedures in the course of their dissent. “Every time we read about one of these, we hear that it is historic in that state's context,” said Thad Kousser, a political science professor at University of California, San Diego in an interview with ABC News. The country is facing an increasingly polarized political climate, with debates around transgender rights, gun...

House votes to send Santos expulsion resolution to ethics panel instead; rep declares him 'a stain'

Rep. George Santos faces the possibility of disciplinary measures from his colleagues in the House. House Republican leaders on Wednesday avoided an on-the-record vote on whether GOP Rep. George Santos should be expelled, instead holding a vote to move the Democratic-proposed resolution to the House Ethics Committee. The full House adopted the Republican motion by a party-line vote of 221-204, with seven members voting present. All five Republicans on the House Ethics Committee voted in favor of the motion, while the Democrats on the committee all voted present. Reps. Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Wash., also voted present. Rep. Anthony D'Esposito, R-N.Y., who represents a district that neighbors Santos', offered the motion to refer in a blistering speech that condemned Santos as "a stain on this institution, a stain on the state of New York, a stain on Long Island and a stain on the beloved Nassau County." "I am personally in favor of ...
