Paul Whelan's family says he feels 'abandoned' by US in Russian prison

American Paul Whelan has been jailed for four years on espionage charges the U.S. calls false. The family of American Paul Whelan, who has been imprisoned in Russia for years, said Monday he feels "abandoned" by the U.S. and that "his resilience is shaken" in the wake of Russia's arrest of a second American on espionage charges. In a Friday phone call with his parents, Whelan, a Business man and former U.S. Marine, said "he feels as though the U.S. government has abandoned him," according to his brother David. "His struggles have been apparent in his letters and in his phone calls over the years," David Whelan wrote. "But now, Paul seems rattled like never before, understandably apprehensive that the U.S. government will choose not to bring him home again, now that there is another American wrongfully detained by the Kremlin." After investigating abuse in prison system, senators propose new oversight law

The Federal Prison Oversight Act builds on similar efforts last year and follows multiple investigations of the prison system led by Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff Bipartisan legislation set to be introduced Wednesday aims to provide more oversight of federal prison s as part of a renewed push to address reports of Scandal and abuse . The bill would create a hotline for prisoners to report misconduct to an accountability office. It would also mandate federal watchdog inspections, congressional reporting requirements and response plans from the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. Russian state media has released rare footage showing Paul Whelan inside a notorious prison camp, providing the first publicly available video images of the im prison ed American in more than three years. Broadcast on Monday, the recording shows Whelan, a Marine veteran, wearing a black uniform and hat among other inmates in what appear to be various areas within IK-17, a maximum-security penal colony in Mordovia -- a remote, wooded region of Russia. It was not clear when the video was taken but it comes amid continuing, high-level U.S. efforts to get him freed. In one scene, Whelan works at a sewing machine and speaks to a reporter, telling him "Sir, you understand when I say I can't do an interview, which means I can't answer any questions." DOJ seeks 25-year prison sentence for Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes

Rhodes and other members of the Oath Keepers were convicted on on charges of seditious conspiracy and other felonies. The Justice Department is asking a federal judge to sentence Oath Keepers found er Stewart Rhodes to 25 years in prison following his conviction along with other members of the anti-government militia group on charges of seditious conspiracy and other felonies stemming from their involvement in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Prosecutors set forth their requested sentences for Rhodes and eight other Oath Keepers convicted of a range of offenses following two separate trials in November of last year and in January. Six of the nine total defendants were convicted on the key seditious conspiracy charge while three others -- Jessica Watkins, Thomas Caldwell and Kenneth Harrelson -- were found not guilty of that charge but were convicted of other serious felonies.
