'There is not a crime crisis,' DC lawmakers insist at testy House hearing on police, public safety

Image
The House Oversight Committee on Wednesday pressed Washington, D.C., officials about public safety, police reform and the crime bill Republican members of the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday pressed Washington, D.C., officials about public safety and the city's management in the wake of Congress taking the unusual step of blocking controversial changes to the local criminal code. For almost four hours, legislators debated D.C.'s laws at a hearing nominally focused on policing in the district. Having stopped the so-called crime bill last month, House Republicans are now seeking to repeal a law enforcement reform bill in D.C. But most of the session focused on crime in D.C. -- such as the recent attack on a staffer for Sen. Rand Paul -- and on the crime bill, rather than on police reform. Some lawmakers were blunt in their questioning. "Why is D.C. allowing violent criminals to remain on the streets for so long?" asked Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C. She cited the Sa...

POLL: Plurality of the public supports Trump indictment

Image
A plurality of Americans think Trump should have been charged by a Manhattan grand jury with an indictment, according to an ABC News/Ipsos poll A plurality of Americans think former President Donald Trump should have been charged by a Manhattan grand jury with a History -making indictment , yet a near equal amount believe that the charges against him are politically motivated, according to a new ABC News/Ipsos poll. According to the poll, 45% think Trump should have been charged with a crime in this case, whereas 32% don't think so and 23% say they don't know. Democrats are, unsurprisingly, rallying behind the grand jury's decision. Almost nine in 10 Democrats (88%) think Trump should have been charged in the investigation by the Manhattan D.A., which has been probing a $130,000 hush money payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels who alleges the two had an affair. Trump has long denied these claims. Compared with Democrats, Republicans are less united. While a ma...

4 lawmakers share their mental health struggles: It's 'a form of public service'

Image
Four members of Congress open up about their own mental health struggles after Sen. John Fetterman took a leave of absence to deal with depression In the wake of Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman entering treatment for severe depression, four Democratic colleagues in Congress exclusively sat down with ABC News to share their support for him and his recovery while applauding his courage on the stigma-clouded topic, which has historically been associated with great political risk. The four lawmakers -- Sen. Tina Smith of Minnesota, Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, Rep. Ruben Gallego of Arizona and Rep. Ritchie Torres of New York -- also spoke candidly about their own mental health battles, ranging from clinical depression to post-traumatic stress disorder, in the occasionally emotional interview. Speaking out, as Torres told ABC's Brittany Shepherd, is the best way forward. "Telling our stories is a form of public service. We represent people who are deeply affected by mental ...

FBI warns against using public USB charging ports

FBI warns against using public charging stations The FBI is warning the public against using charging stations in malls and at airports, according to a tweet from the bureau's Denver office. The public charging stations could be a conduit for bad actors to introduce malware onto personal devices, officials warn. "Avoid using free charging stations in airports, hotels or shopping centers," the FBI Denver said. "Bad actors have figured out ways to use public USB ports to introduce malware and monitoring software onto devices. Carry your own charger and USB cord and use an electrical outlet instead." The FBI didn't respond to ABC News' request for comment on whether there has been a rise in malicious activity related to the cyber-theft tactic known as "juice jacking." Most leading Republicans remain quiet on abortion pill ruling as Democrats blast decision

Image
Many Republicans have remained mum on a Texas federal judge's controversial ruling against the abortion pill mifepristone In the days after a federal judge in Texas ruled to reverse the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's approval of the widely used abortion medication mifepristone, Democrats have erupted in outrage. Republicans, who for years made abortion restrictions a centerpiece of their politics, have remained mostly mum on the issue that looks set for a Supreme Court showdown. Some in the GOP have suggested they are now on the "wrong side" of abortion, which polling has shown can be a leading issue to motivate voters -- against possible restrictions. By contrast, leading conservatives last June swiftly celebrated the Supreme Court striking down Roe v. Wade, praising the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision as putting the issue of abortion back in the hands of the people -- in the states -- and not having it determined by the court. ...

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez is previewing his case to occupy a potential third lane in a Republican primary that has so far largely featured Trump and DeSantis As the Re public an field for president takes shape around former President Donald Trump, with Gov. Ron DeSantis expected to launch his own campaign by the summer, a third Floridian is angling to possibly join the 2024 race. Miami Mayor Francis Suarez is weighing a bid for the White House, recently telling ABC affiliate WMUR that he would be making a decision "shortly" on whether to run. Suarez has visited multiple early nominating states, including a visit last week to New Hampshire where he spoke at the Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College, a staple venue for many mulling a presidential campaign. There, Suarez highlighted his profile and backstory as the Hispanic son of a former Miami mayor and the Republican executive of a major American city, who was easily reelected in 2021. He touted his policy credentia...
