Too old to hold office? A political flashpoint amid Americans' concerns: ANALYSIS

Image
"How old is too old? That's an unanswerable question," one expert told ABC News. You could call it an age-old question: How old is too old to hold public office ? Long-debated in American politics, it's come to the fore once again after an alarming moment last week when Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell appeared to freeze for half a minute while answering reporter questions, strikingly similar to another such episode in July. Doctors tell ABC News that anyone who experiences similar symptoms -- regardless of their age -- should seek immediate medical attention. And McConnell's office has since released a statement that he's medically clear to work. But the episode has sparked renewed concern about the 81-year-old Republican leader's Health after a March concussion -- and broader questions about the relatively advanced ages of some of the nation's most powerful elected officials. Those questions also made headlines when Democratic Sen. Di...

Official removed from office under 14th Amendment speaks out as Trump case looms

Image
Former Otero County, New Mexico, Commissioner Couy Griffin was disqualified under the 14th Amendment's Section 3 in 2022 -- and that argument is being used against Trump As a legal battle begins to brew over whether the 14th Amendment disqualifies Donald Trump from the 2024 presidential election because of Jan. 6 -- which would mark an unprecedented and controversial development -- ABC News recently spoke with the one politician who has been removed from office under that same argument. Former Otero County, New Mexico, Commissioner Couy Griffin was disqualified almost exactly a year ago after Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics (CREW) sued to eject him from his role under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Section 3 states that someone isn't eligible for future office if, while they were previously in office , they took an oath to support the Constitution but then "engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or [gave] aid or comfort to the enemies thereof,...

A closer look at DeSantis' record on fracking: Florida voters banned it as he took office

Image
Nikki Haley accused Ron DeSantis at the Republican primary debate on Wednesday of banning hydraulic fracking in Florida -- a misleading claim Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley accused Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis at the Republican primary debate on Wednesday night of banning hydraulic fracking in his state -- a misleading claim the governor, who has advocated for more domestic oil production as he runs for president, firmly denied. "Our voters enacted a constitutional amendment that doesn't allow" offshore drilling, DeSantis explained, before Haley cut him off. "You banned it before they voted," she said. "She's totally wrong," he countered. While DeSantis did campaign against fracking while he was running for governor, a position shared by other Republicans at the time, the ban wasn't authorized by him. Once in office, he also signed an executive order to "adamantly oppose" the process and other offshore drilling. As a presidential c...

DHS office that counters nuclear weapons could close if Congress doesn’t act by December

A DHS office that counters weapons of mass destruction will close without authorization in December -- and could depend on Republicans' ability to choose a speaker. An office at the Department of Homeland Security that helps detect biological and chemical weapons could shutter if Congress doesn't fund it by December -- an increasingly likely possibility as Republicans on Capitol Hill struggle to select a speaker. The Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office at the Department of Homeland Security, which is the one-stop shop for the department's detection and research of biological weapons, will close if not funded by December because of language put into the initial development of the office in 2018. Some of the capabilities of the office include supporting large events like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade with radiological detection devices and supporting state and local governments with nuclear detection devices. "This is a highly charged environment, a...

DOJ reviewing as Biden lawyer says classified docs found in his old office

The Department of Justice is reviewing classified documents found at the University of Pennsylvania's Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C., sources said The Department of Justice has launched a preliminary review into classified documents found at the University of Pennsylvania's Penn Biden Center in Washington, D.C., sources told ABC News.  In a statement, an attorney for President Joe Biden said his team first flagged the materials to both DOJ and the National Archives and Record Administration. "The White House is cooperating with the National Archives and the Department of Justice regarding the discovery of what appear to be Obama-Biden Administration records, including a small number of documents with classified markings," Richard Sauber, a special counsel to Biden, said in a statement. Sauber said the documents were found on Nov. 2 and the National Archives was notified by the White House on the same day, then took possession of them on Nov. 3. The documents ...

The House Oversight Committee, led by Republican Rep. James Comer, is investigating Joe Biden's handling of classified records The new chair of the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday notified the White House that his panel is investigating President Joe Biden's handling of classified records from Biden's time as vice president -- some of which were found in November at an office Biden had used in Washington, D.C. In a letter to White House counsel Stuart Delery, obtained by ABC News, Republican Rep. James Comer of Kentucky asked the White House to provide all documents that were retrieved from Biden's personal office. The Oversight Committee is also seeking a list of those who had access to Biden's office; all documents related to the handling of classified documents, including by Biden's lawyers, and the status of their security clearance; and all documents between the White House, the Department of Justice and the National Archives and Record Administra...
