White House unveils initiative to target fentanyl supply chain with international partners

The White House will announce on Tuesday a coordinated international effort to disrupt the supply chain of fentanyl and other illicit synthetic drugs. The Biden administration plans on Tuesday to unveil a new initiative to combat the supply chain for fentanyl and other illicit synthetic drugs in the U.S. and abroad. The effort will aim to "prevent illicit drug manufacturing, detect emerging drug threats, disrupt trafficking, address illicit finance, and respond to public safety and public Health impacts," the White House said. The rollout includes cooperation with international governments, which were unnamed in a fact sheet released on Tuesday. Nearly 300 people were arrested as a result of a years-long, three-continent operation targeting darknet trafficking of fentanyl and opioids, the Justice Department and FBI announced Tuesday. Under "Operation SpecTor," the "largest ever operation targeting the trafficking of fentanyl and opioids on the dark web," 288 people were arrested within the last two years, and more than 850 kilograms of drugs -- including 64 kilos of fentanyl or fentanyl-laced narcotics -- intended to be sold on the darknet were seized, DOJ said. The seizures include 50.6 million pills laced with the ultra-deadly synthetic opioid and 10,000 pounds of fentanyl powder, the DEA said. “These seizures – enough deadly doses of fentanyl to kill every American – reflect the DEA’s unwavering commitment to protect Americans and save lives, by tenaciously pursuing those responsible for the trafficking of fentanyl across the United States," DEA Administrator Anne Milgram said in a statement Friday.
