Biden speaks to family of WSJ reporter, says detention by Russia is 'totally illegal'

Biden talks to the family of Evan Gershkovich. President Joe Biden spoke to the family of Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter who the United States says is being unjustly imprisoned by Russia, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporter s aboard Air Force One on Tuesday. The president "felt it was really important to connect with Evan's family ," Jean-Pierre said. "We're making it real clear that it's totally illegal what's happening," Biden told reporters on the tarmac as he boarded the plane to depart for a state visit to Ireland. The State Department announced on Monday that Gershkovich, who was arrested on espionage charges in late March that the U.S. adamantly denies, is now officially classified as a wrongfully detained American, a designation that grants additional powers and resources to U.S. officials as they work to secure his freedom. The Gershkovich said that it was encouraged by both the State Departmen...

Billionaire Harlan Crow paid school tuition for Justice Thomas' grandnephew, report says

Image
ProPublica reported Thursday the tuition payments may have exceeded $150,000. A new report on Thursday alleged even deeper financial ties between Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and billionaire Republican donor Harlan Crow. According to ProPublica, Crow paid for private school tuition for Thomas' grandnephew Mark Martin, whom Thomas said he was raising as a son. The publication said Crow paid $6,200 monthly tuition for Martin's attendance at Hidden Lake Academy in 2009, citing a bank statement and an interview with a former administrator at the school. That former administrator told ProPublica Crow told him he also paid for Martin's tuition at Randolph-Macon Academy, which he attended before Hidden Lake Academy. The total amount paid by Crow is unclear but could have exceeded $150,000, the outlet reported. Thomas didn't report the payments on his financial disclosure filings, though he did disclose another $5,000 gift for Martin's education from another in...

Most UFO reports likely to have 'ordinary' explanations, government says, as investigation continues

Most of the hundreds of UFO reports that the Pentagon has been investigating will likely be explained by "ordinary phenomena," according to a new review of the incidents The Pentagon and the U.S. intelligence community believe that as better data becomes available, the "unidentified and purported anomalous nature" of most of the hundreds of UFO reports they have been investigating will likely be explained by " ordinary phenomena," according to a government review of the incidents that was released on Wednesday. The number of accounts of unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAPs -- which is the official name now used for what were known as UFOs -- has grown to 801, with an increase of 291 additional reports from Aug. 31,2022, to April 30 of this year, according to the new government review. The total number of UAP sightings that is being examined by the Pentagon and intelligence officials stretches back decades and includes those made by both military ...

White House, Secret Service respond to report of Bidens' dog biting people

The White House and the U.S. Secret Service react to report of the Bidens' dog, Commander Biden, biting seven people in four months. Another Biden pup is in the doghouse. The White House and Secret Service are responding to a report of first dog Commander Biden biting several people, including Secret Service agents, at the president's various residences. The New York Post cites US Secret Service emails obtained by Judicial Watch via a Freedom of Information Act request that detail incidents of the German Shepard biting seven people in a four-month period -- including one incident that resulted in the victim, a Secret Service agent, being transported to a hospital after getting treatment from White House medical personnel. Neither the White House nor the Secret Service addressed the specifics of the report in their statements but seemingly confirmed the bad behavior by Commander. The communications director for first lady Jill Biden, Elizabeth Alexander, said the first famil...

Clarence Thomas accepted luxury travel and hospitality perks from billionaire Republican donor Harlan Crow, ProPublica reported, igniting controversy A Thursday report that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas accepted luxury travel and hospitality perks from a billionaire Republican donor was met with both renewed criticism of how the justices self-police and renewed calls for oversight and the impeachment of the embattled conservative. The controversy was touched off by a ProPublica story describing how Thomas and his wife, Ginni, a conservative activist, were treated to high-end vacations and private jet travel subsidized by Dallas-based businessman Harlan Crow, who has a record of contributing millions to Republican candidates and causes. Thomas did not report the gifts on his annual financial disclosure filings, according to ProPublica -- an omission that ethics experts say violates a code of conduct for federal officials. Neither Thomas nor the Supreme Court and its counsel...
