'There is not a crime crisis,' DC lawmakers insist at testy House hearing on police, public safety

Image
The House Oversight Committee on Wednesday pressed Washington, D.C., officials about public safety, police reform and the crime bill Republican members of the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday pressed Washington, D.C., officials about public safety and the city's management in the wake of Congress taking the unusual step of blocking controversial changes to the local criminal code. For almost four hours, legislators debated D.C.'s laws at a hearing nominally focused on policing in the district. Having stopped the so-called crime bill last month, House Republicans are now seeking to repeal a law enforcement reform bill in D.C. But most of the session focused on crime in D.C. -- such as the recent attack on a staffer for Sen. Rand Paul -- and on the crime bill, rather than on police reform. Some lawmakers were blunt in their questioning. "Why is D.C. allowing violent criminals to remain on the streets for so long?" asked Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C. She cited the Sa...

Tennessee lawmakers face expulsion after gun control protest

Three Democratic Tennessee lawmakers are facing expulsion resolutions after Republicans said their gun control protest violated the chamber's rules of decorum -- an extraordinarily rare rebuke from state lawmakers following the Nashville school shooting. Tennessee's GOP Reps. Bud Hulsey, Gino Bulso and Andrew Farmer sponsored resolutions Monday in an effort to remove Democratic Reps. Gloria Johnson, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, arguing the lawmakers "did knowingly and intentionally bring disorder and dishonor to the House of Representatives through their individual and collective actions" by shouting and pounding at the podium as part of their protest against gun violence last Thursday. MORE: Why semi-automatic rifles like those used in the Nashville shooting can cause so much damage Republican lawmakers including Speaker Cameron Sexton accused the trio of attempting to incite an insurrection, according to ABC affiliate WKRN. "That's absurd, factua...

Who are the 3 Tennessee Democratic lawmakers facing expulsion?

Image
Gloria Johnson, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, the three Tennesee lawmakers who GOP leaders are looking to expel, have been vocal on gun control issues for years. The Republican-led Tennessee House of Representatives scheduled a vote to expel three Democratic members on Thursday over their involvement in a gun control protest last week following the Nashville school shooting. Reps. Gloria Johnson, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson have said they have no regrets about speaking out against gun violence and calling on their colleagues to do more to enact laws that crack down on gun access. MORE: Tennessee expulsion vote: State House could oust Democratic lawmakers after gun violence protest Pearson told ABC News' "Start Here," before the vote that he and his colleagues were never allowed to speak out on behalf of their constituents, many of whom are demanding common sense gun reform, and dismissed the GOP member's arguments that they violated the chamber's rules o...

4 lawmakers share their mental health struggles: It's 'a form of public service'

Image
Four members of Congress open up about their own mental health struggles after Sen. John Fetterman took a leave of absence to deal with depression In the wake of Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman entering treatment for severe depression, four Democratic colleagues in Congress exclusively sat down with ABC News to share their support for him and his recovery while applauding his courage on the stigma-clouded topic, which has historically been associated with great political risk. The four lawmakers -- Sen. Tina Smith of Minnesota, Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, Rep. Ruben Gallego of Arizona and Rep. Ritchie Torres of New York -- also spoke candidly about their own mental health battles, ranging from clinical depression to post-traumatic stress disorder, in the occasionally emotional interview. Speaking out, as Torres told ABC's Brittany Shepherd, is the best way forward. "Telling our stories is a form of public service. We represent people who are deeply affected by mental ...

Republican lawmakers demand TikTok ban for members of Congress

Image
The move escalates an ongoing attack on the China-based social media app. A group of Republican lawmakers on Monday called for a ban on the use of TikTok by their colleagues in Congress, escalating an attack on the China-based social media app over data security fears that has rapidly gained momentum on Capitol Hill. Sen. Rick Scott and Sen. Thom Tillis are among 17 Republican lawmakers issuing the request to leaders of the Senate Rules Committee and the Committee on House Administration. "We urge you to amend the House and Senate rules to bar members of Congress from continued use of TikTok and take any other appropriate measures to mitigate the risks of this de-facto, spyware app," the elected officials said in a letter to committee leaders. "Some members of Congress who regularly use the app have minimized the security threat to our nation, and their defense is not compelling, considering there are several popular social media apps that are not at the same risk for ...

McCarthy says 'every hour matters' on debt ceiling as lawmakers set to leave town

Image
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he's directed "our teams to work 24/7 to try to solve this problem." With just seven days until potential default, House members are heading home for Memorial Day recess -- without a debt ceiling deal in sight. "Every hour matters," House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told ABC News Senior Congressional Correspondent Rachel Scott on Thursday. "That's why the White House has to become very serious about this." McCarthy refused to say whether Republican and White House negotiators will meet Thursday as the countdown continues toward June 1 -- the date Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen predicts the U.S. may become unable to pay all of its bills. MORE: Debt ceiling timeline: When are Medicaid, Social Security and other payments in jeopardy The speaker still expressed optimism the two sides will come to an agreement. "We worked well past midnight last night," McCarthy said. "And yesterday, I thought, was a very g...
